Tajikistan faces significant health and environmental risks from obsolete Soviet-era pesticides. With support from FAO, the Global Environment Facility, and Tajikistan's Committee for Environmental Protection, a pilot cleanup in Jayhun District successfully excavated 33 tons of pesticides and 5,000 tons of polluted soil. This hazardous waste was safely transported to a specialized facility in Vakhsh District.

This initiative provides a replicable model for remediating approximately 200 similar sites nationwide. The restored land is now available for agriculture, including plans for lemon greenhouses. This project demonstrates how international cooperation can reclaim contaminated land for sustainable farming and healthier communities.
