Kyrgyzstan addressed its legacy of unmanaged Soviet-era pesticides through an FAO project mapping 62 hazardous sites. This involved safely repacking and storing 90 tonnes of high-risk chemicals near Osh, establishing a national pesticide handling team, and successful bio-remediation trials. A pilot container collection system, gathering over 1,200 kg, now serves as a national blueprint for safe disposal.

The nation also launched an electronic pesticide registration system in September 2025. Medical staff are trained for exposure diagnosis, and over 960 agronomists guide farmers on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). University students are adopting IPM, shifting Kyrgyzstan from its past chemical dependence. For more information and to subscribe, visit FAO: http://www.fao.org and YouTube.
