Mozambique’s Blue Transformation: Protecting Fisheries, Restoring Livelihoods

FAO supports coastal communities in Mozambique to restore marine ecosystems, protect fisheries resources, and strengthen livelihoods. With funding from the Government of Sweden, these communities are adopting responsible fishing practices and restoring vital mangrove forests.

They are also developing alternative income opportunities, such as beekeeping and poultry production, particularly during fishing closure periods. These efforts reduce pressure on marine resources, improve household incomes and resilience, and contribute to a sustainable future through FAO's Blue Transformation approach.

Inside FAO's Risk Monitor: From Risk Detection to Anticipatory Action

The FAO Risk Monitor is a dynamic, real-time platform for monitoring food security risks. It facilitates coordinated early detection, warning, and rapid response by providing an open data-sharing platform for members and partners. This supports effective decision-making, anticipatory actions, and the swift disbursement of resources to prevent food crises and mitigate the impact of simultaneous shocks.

Designed as a global public good, the Risk Monitor integrates multiple multidimensional hazard indicators, offering actionable, evidence-based analyses and pre-defined triggers for intervention. It covers both insurable risks like droughts and floods, and traditionally non-insurable threats such as political instability, conflict, and locust outbreaks.

Digital key to advance deepwater shark identification

Accurate shark identification is essential for sustainable deep-sea fisheries. A new digital identification key, developed by FAO’s Common Oceans Deep Sea Fisheries Project and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), provides fishers, observers, and scientists with a modern, easy-to-use tool. It facilitates precise recognition of deepwater shark species in the Western Indian Ocean.

Using photos, graphics, and a simple step-by-step interface, the key ensures accurate species recording. This supports crucial conservation and RFMO management in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ). For more information, visit the Common Oceans and GEF project pages, or subscribe to FAO's YouTube channel.

Rural Women in Tajikistan

Rural women constitute nearly 60% of Tajikistan's agricultural workforce, performing key tasks in farming and livestock. Despite their vital role, many remain unrecognized, working informally with limited access to resources, training, and decision-making. Expanding equal access to knowledge and opportunities is essential for more productive farms, stronger families, and resilient agrifood systems.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) collaborates with rural women to strengthen skills, improve resource access, and ensure fair recognition for their work. Connect with FAO: YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter, Weibo. Learn more at fao.org.

Video Message By Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General for World Food Safety Day 2026

On World Food Safety Day 2026, we highlight the theme "From burden to solutions: safe food everywhere." This emphasizes the critical need for both science-based evidence to understand foodborne disease risks and practical solutions to address them. FAO is dedicated to helping countries translate this evidence into effective action, identifying priorities, and allocating resources efficiently.

We support Members in strengthening food control systems, developing international standards under the One Health framework, and building national capacity to manage risks. These efforts reduce illness, protect public health, and foster economic development. Food safety is everyone's business—governments, businesses, and consumers all play a vital role. Through sustained commitment and science-based solutions, we can ensure safe food for all.

On the frontline in the fight against IUU fishing: FAO and ICCAT train Senegal port inspectors

Inspectors in Dakar, Senegal, are undergoing hands-on training to conduct live vessel inspections. Supported by FAO, the GEF-funded Common Oceans Tuna Project, and ICCAT, this initiative equips them to check documents, examine fishing gear, and verify catches. The goal is to build crucial skills for detecting illegal fishing and preventing illicit catches from entering the market.

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing severely threatens marine biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, and livelihoods. Ten years after its entry into force, FAO’s Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) empowers countries to strengthen port controls and international cooperation, effectively closing the net on illegal fishing worldwide.
