The climate crisis has heightened challenges for the Wayuu Indigenous communities in Venezuela’s La Guajira region. To aid their recovery, FAO has implemented initiatives to enhance food security and livelihoods for 5,745 individuals across six communities.

These efforts include rehabilitating degraded lands, managing soil and water sustainably, and boosting agricultural production with drought-tolerant seeds and climate-resilient irrigation systems. The project also restored community wells and water reservoirs using renewable energy to ensure access to water for households and agriculture. A gender-responsive approach empowered Indigenous women in food production and resource management, blending traditional knowledge with technical skills to create resilient agrifood systems.

A study by the FAO and the Green-Gold Mongolia Rangeland Research Center reveals that Mongolia's pastoral systems support greater biodiversity compared to other livestock systems. It highlights that pastoralist women face challenges in accessing assets like livestock ownership, despite their significant contributions to household decisions and community leadership.

Conducted across five districts in two ecological zones, the research involved surveys from 424 households, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. Key themes included mobility patterns, biodiversity perceptions, workload distribution, women's empowerment, youth employment, and income perceptions. The study advocates for enhanced support for pastoral systems and pastoralist women.

Our future is at risk as fossil fuels drive humanity towards extinction and exacerbate social injustices and climate crises. To create a livable planet and foster a just, resilient future, we need transformative systemic change.

Despite inadequate climate action from high-polluting governments and corporations, Indigenous and frontline women leaders are rising to the challenge, turning grief into action. The Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) is releasing a video ahead of COP31, emphasizing the need for a Just Energy Transition and highlighting women-led climate solutions. WECAN advocates for Indigenous rights, community-led initiatives, and women’s leadership in decision-making. Learn more about WECAN’s advocacy at the United Nations and Global Policy Forums.

Rizky Oktaviana endured 18 months of unpaid labor as a fisher on a trawling vessel, witnessing illegal fishing practices and harsh conditions. Now, he advocates for the rights of migrant fishers, highlighting that at least 128,000 fishers are currently trapped in forced labor at sea. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing not only exploits workers but also threatens marine ecosystems and global food security, costing between $26 to $50 billion annually.

To combat these abuses, coordinated action is essential, including stronger protections from policymakers and transparency in seafood supply chains. Learn more about fishers' journeys from exploitation to advocacy and how we can work together for a better future for fishers and our oceans: Fishers Speak Out.
