People of many faiths embrace the idea of "creation care" - taking care of God's gift of earth. Join Jose Aguto and Tori Goebel to hear how their faith guides their climate action, and how you can build relationships with faith leaders in your community. Tori serves as the National Organizer and Spokesperson for Young Evangelicals for Climate Action. She holds an undergraduate degree in communications and political science from Gordon College (B.A. '16) and a masters of environmental law and policy from Vermont Law School (M.E.L.P. '19). Tori spent 4 years as Communications Director for YECA and the Evangelical Environmental Network, YECA’s partner ministry. Tori was born and raised in New England and currently lives in the Boston area. Catholic Climate Covenant collaborates with Catholic organizations and across sectors to advance the Church's call to love and care for God's creation, our vulnerable neighbors, and all people, including those we may view as adversaries. Prior to the Covenant, Jose worked for the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the National Congress of American Indians, EPA's American Indian Environmental Office and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Andrea Zink has spent her career working in the non-profit sector for mission-driven organizations such as The Salvation Army, Vanderbilt University, and Nashville Opera. Stabilizing our climate is going to take some hard truths – and hard numbers. “If you look at 1.5 degrees, it's about 13 years,” says Stanford’s Arun Majumdar. “If you look at 2 degrees, it’s 20 years. And after that, it’s zero.” Meaning: zero time left to solve our planet’s climate problem. But there are ways to turn that zero into a plus – if we act fast enough. “We need to start thinking about carbon removal now,” says Kate Gordon of the Columbia Center on Global Energy Policy. “We can't wait for the second half of the century to start doing the research and development, and getting this to scale and figuring out the technology and stopping deforestation - because these things have got to be part of the current solution.” One way to fight back? With the power of zero: a zero emissions electric grid, zero emission transportation, zero emission buildings and zero waste manufacturing. Getting to zero in those four areas could be the climate solution – if we can all get on the same page. Later in the show: Fighting climate change isn’t cheap. Where’s the money coming from – and where is it going? Greg Dalton was joined by donors big and small for a Climate One discussion on harnessing the power of the purse in the fight against climate change. Major philanthropic organizations like Hewlett, Packard and Bloomberg are at the forefront when it comes to addressing climate change. But are their dollars going to the right places? Tate Williams of Inside Philanthropy thinks they could be doing better. “I find that even today philanthropy doesn't fund the grassroots enough; they don't fund movement building enough,” says Williams. “And then in particular, I find that they don't fund communities of color and low-income communities that have the most to lose when it comes to climate change.” In many ways, small to mid-sized foundations can be more effective on a grass-roots level. He talks about his love for outdoor hockey and how climate change affects the sport. Talking about his history with outdoor hockey, and the work he has done to get an outdoor refrigerated rink built in Kamloops, British Columbia, he sheds light on dream project - Shinny Forever. James has been working for the Sustainability Office at TRU for the last 5 years. Prior to this he did a Masters degree in Environmental Education and Communication from Royal Roads University where he wrote his thesis, Pond hockey dads and climate change: How Canadian fathers feel about the threat of losing the game they love. He is very concerned about the health of key environmental aspects of the planet and recognizes the need for deep and widespread improvements in these areas. However, he’s also deeply touched by the constant examples of inspiring people and technologies that are addressing these issues and trying to make a positive difference. He witnesses examples of this on a regular basis right here at TRU and believes that institutions of learning can and should position themselves on the front lines of tackling environmental problems. The Tar Sands Resistance March on June 6, 2015, brought over 5,000 people to St. Paul, MN, marking the region's largest anti-tar sands demonstration. The march delivered a unified message: keep toxic tar sands out of America's Heartland to protect water, climate, and communities.
