Joining Ascend, a nonprofit teaching leadership and rock climbing, allowed them to explore their country's mountains. When the Taliban seized power in August 2021, Ascend became their only chance to escape the restrictive regime.

As Ascend women resettled globally with host families, Yosemite Search and Rescue members Merryn Venugopal and Michelle Pellette invited them to Yosemite. There, they found safe reunion, solace in the climbing community, and a vital connection to home while building new lives.

A reactivated global Corporate Leaders Network (CLN) was launched at COP27 on November 11. Its aim is to catalyze national business advocacy on climate policy, uniting policy, NGO, and international business stakeholders to manage risks and seize opportunities in the transition to a low-carbon society.

Building on relationships fostered by Corporate Leaders Groups (CLGs) since 2010, the CLN formally re-establishes collaboration with global business groups. It will support the creation of new corporate leaders' groups worldwide, strengthening the network. Previous members are reinvited to join if their missions align.

Amara elevates youth voices in state and federal policy. In 2021, she coordinated Maine’s first climate education summit, gathering young people’s visions. Annika Weber, 18, co-founded the Northwest School Carbon Neutrality Task Force in early 2021. Observing widespread burnout among youth activists, she sought to combine youth passion with adult experience for sustained, tangible results. The task force, including students, parents, and faculty, researched how her high school could achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

They surveyed the community, collected baseline data, and presented a report to school leadership. The school is now finalizing the adoption of these recommendations. If implemented, it would be the first 6-12 school in the U.S. to target carbon neutrality by 2030 without carbon offsets.

The new approach shifts from a flexible 80-point score to mandatory requirements across 10 key topics, including social, governance, and environmental impact, making certification more relevant for current and future challenges.
