Alice Wilson is a PhD candidate at the University of York and studies an examination of tiny housing as a unique and emerging sector within self-build projects. After a short break from education she won an ESRC 1+3 scholarship to complete a PhD on the potential that Tiny Houses have to address inter-generational justice issues, whilst moving us closer to achieving our environmental justice goals as a country and as a planet. Sustainability is often presented as being complex, expensive, and fraught with difficulty, it is considered the preserve of those who can afford it, and with the means and the ‘know how' to achieve it. Leaving behind those that need it the most. The truth is that becoming sustainable isn’t complex. We can’t pretend it is always easy and that it doesn’t require us all to change our behaviour, but it isn’t as confusing as is often presented. This talk hopes to dispel the myth that becoming sustainable is complex, bring to life the compromises and decisions that we can all make to play our part and demystify and democratise the idea of sustainability.
