Chief Arvol Looking Horse is the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe, and Spiritual Leader of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Oyate, known as the Great Sioux Nation. He has worked to reconcile traditional healing and western medicine since the 1970s, and admits it is still a struggle.

F. Sherwood Rowland, UCI Bren Research Professor of chemistry and Earth system science, received the 1995 Nobel Prize in chemistry for discovering that chlorofluorocarbons in products such as aerosol sprays damage the Earths protective ozone layer.
