Karl-Henrik Robèrt, a Swedish cancer scientist and leading figure in the global sustainability movement, developed the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, also known as The Natural Step Framework. This framework provides a scientific approach to implementing sustainability, offering the "missing piece" for effective action.

Arising from extensive consultations across diverse sectors, the framework outlines system conditions for sustainability.
