Oakland is reimagining public safety funding and policing amidst nationwide calls for racial justice. The Defund OPD campaign, launched five years ago by the Anti Police-Terror Project (APTP), aims to transform the criminal justice system.

Join a discussion with campaign leaders Cat Brooks and James Burch. Brooks, co-founder of APTP, developed community-based responses to police violence and is executive director of the Justice Teams Network. Burch, policy director for the Justice Teams Network and president of the National Lawyers Guild of the Bay Area, brings legal expertise and personal experience to the movement.

James discusses his passion for outdoor hockey and how climate change threatens the sport. He highlights his "Shinny Forever" project, an outdoor refrigerated rink in Kamloops, British Columbia. With five years at TRU's Sustainability Office and a Master's thesis on climate change's impact on pond hockey, he is deeply concerned about the planet's environmental health.

Despite these concerns, James is inspired by people and technologies addressing environmental issues, witnessing positive examples at TRU. James founded "Phone credit for refugees and displaced people" after an eye-opening trip to Calais. What began as a Facebook group evolved into an organization providing vital phone credit to displaced adults and children worldwide. This initiative offers the gift of communication to those separated from family and friends, far from home, and in uncertain circumstances.

The organization has supplied over £700,000 worth of phone credit, enabling people to contact loved ones, stay updated with news, and summon emergency, life-saving assistance. With over 70,000 Facebook followers, their impact is significant. James's talk explores the boundaries of compassion and responsibility, defining community, and how he found a creative solution.
