By buying European CO2-emission rights, her start-up enables individuals to influence the carbon emissions of the European economy, making it as easy as online shopping. Sounds too simple to be true? In her Talk, Ruth will explain the functions of the EU emission trading system and how your single action can indeed have an impact. Ruth, a graduate physicist, worked in the field of renewable energies and emissions trading at Statkraft and gained experience in the voluntary carbon market at atmosfair. However, she wanted to make it possible to offset carbon emissions with a direct effect in Europe. That’s why she founded the non-profit organisation ForTomorrow in December 2019. Network virtualization (a.k.a. network slicing) allows multiple logical networks to coexist on a single physical network while isolated from each other, i.e., without performance or security interferences. It was first propounded as a diversifying attribute of the future inter-networking paradigm that can enable seamless integration of new features resulting in a more rapid evolution of the Internet architecture. Later, it was rolled out in data center networks to provide bandwidth guarantees to cloud applications. More recently, it has been incorporated as a pillar of 5G and beyond mobile communication networks to provide differentiated services with stringent bandwidth, latency and reliability requirements. However, despite a significant progress in virtualization research and technologies over the last two decades, the end-to-end deployment of virtual networks in practice remains unrealized. This talk provided an overview of the genesis and evolution of network virtualization, present key underlying challenges and solution ideas, and an outlook to end-to-end 5G and beyond network slicing. WRI’s Global Restoration Initiative and researchers from Land & Carbon Lab have partnered with Meta to develop a groundbreaking AI foundation model that we’ve used to produce the world’s first global map of tree canopy height at a 1-meter resolution, allowing the detection of single trees at a global scale.

This new high-resolution data sets a baseline for remotely monitoring changes at the level of individual trees, making it a critical advancement for measuring land use emissions and tracking progress on conservation and restoration projects, which are essential for achieving the world’s goals for climate, nature and people. While this initial data set has limitations, it demonstrates the power of foundation models — a type of AI model that can serve as the “foundation� for a variety of tasks — to pave a new path toward AI-driven earth monitoring.

Most of us are indulged in our daily activities, too busy and occupied in trying to have a better lifestyle without concern for the detrimental impact being caused to our environment, particularly through a plethora of deforestations and stubborn use of single-use plastic. Understanding the need of the hour, Mr. Ankit Tripathi, founded UNEAKO, an organization that supports our environment by offering not just bio-friendly and plastic alternate products, but products that are made from a variety of waste materials. He has been a source of inspiration for upcoming entrepreneurs and environmentalists alike and speaks about the importance of innovative solutions that promote sustainability being key to the future of co-existence. Driven by a firm passion to reduce the generation of garbage and elimination of plastic in huge piles of waste, which happens to be a serious imminent threat to our Planet, he talks about the ease with which something that is generally considered as waste can turn into a highly useful resource just by a tweak in our perception. Adventurous, open-minded and curious, that’s how my friends would describe me. I am Katharina Flatt, 16 years old and currently in IB1 in Salem. I grew up in a small town in central Germany, almost as a single child as my three older siblings moved out quite early. The limited offers in my hometown, the excitement of my older sibling’s life and most certainly my curiosity gave me the wish to explore different cultures and lifestyles from the very beginning. At the end of primary school, I did my first exchange to France for six months. This experience gave me the opportunity to live in a new environment, learn a new language and develop myself at a very young age. From then on, I’ve done exchanges to Peru and the US. Together with my family, I also started travelling and exploring nature very early and continued this passion. I can never get enough of nature, especially snowy mountains and wide oceans awake an extraordinary feeling in myself. All these interests led to my big wish to participate in “Classroom under Sails�, a project where a group of young students sail across the Atlantic and visit several countries on the way. This was probably the biggest adventure in my life, not always easy but a challenge in itself. Living on a small space with many people, getting up in the middle of the night to do your night watch, having classes on deck on the wavy ocean, glancing into cultures opposite from yours and being exposed to nature for half a year makes you reflect on everything you have ever done. For me, personally, this journey isn’t over, I keep processing what I saw and learned, and I keep doubting my actions and my lifestyle. Certainly, the biggest aspect of my thoughts is about the environment and the inequality behind it. In this talk I want to give a small glimpse of what I have experienced and how my perspective on our consumer society has changed. Better design and reuse are clearly on top of the agenda, but there's demands for better recycling are also firmly on the agenda of governments, organisations and consumers. Join this session to hear the story of how DS Smith has aimed to tackle this issue, starting by finding a solution to recycling coffee cups at scale in a standard paper mill, and then moving on to consider the system that sits around that technology with the launch of their Coffee Drop Box solution. We'll also be joined in the studio by the Head of Environment from one of the UK's largest coffee retailers, who will talk about the challenge of single use takeaway cups and the respective roles that reuse and recycling can play in changing a consumer's relationship with those products.
