ML models in mobile apps pose computational and energy challenges. Distributed ML addresses this by distributing loads across network nodes, enabling edge ML and improving privacy.

Yet, distributed ML faces hurdles: slower execution from limited node capabilities and high bandwidth consumption for data transfer. This creates a paradox, as it aims for low latency and reduced cloud bandwidth. Carla Fabiana Chiasserini will discuss this paradox and its resolution using dynamic ML structures and compression.

Next-generation communication networks, driven by AI and Machine Learning, face a critical "dark triad" challenge: balancing transparency, privacy, and performance. These objectives often conflict; for instance, increased transparency may compromise sensitive data, while prioritizing privacy can impact AI model performance. Achieving a delicate equilibrium is essential for effective AI-based algorithm design in communication networks.

This crucial topic was discussed by Silvia Giordano, with moderators Ian F. Akyildiz and Alessia Magliarditi, as part of the ITU Journal on Future and Evolving Technologies (ITU J-FET) webinar series. The ITU J-FET is an international journal providing free coverage of communication and networking paradigms. Christof Koch is a prominent neuroscientist focused on the neural bases of consciousness. Born in 1956, he earned his Ph.D. in biophysics after studying physics and philosophy. His distinguished career includes extensive research on the brain, particularly the visual cortex, and developing theories of consciousness. He notably collaborated with Francis Crick, co-discoverer of DNA's structure.

Koch served as a professor at Caltech for decades before becoming Chief Scientist and President of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, where he led pioneering brain mapping efforts. An influential figure, he has authored several books and speaks widely, advocating for a scientifically grounded approach to understanding the mind.
