This is what millions of monarch butterflies look like. Last week Center staff traveled to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve near Mexico City to witness eastern monarch butterflies during their annual overwintering. Most of the world's monarchs are currently at the reserve. They’re stirring now with the spring warmth, and in March they'll begin one of planet's great migrations. The number of monarchs at the reserve right now is astounding – a sight that brings people to tears. The just-released annual count of these butterflies is 225 million, an increase of 144 percent from last year’s count, and is the highest count since 2006 due to good weather during the spring and summer. But to ensure the continued existence of monarch butterflies, more protections are needed for this migratory wonder and its habitats. Witnessing the amazing spectacle of monarchs in Mexico has inspired us to fight even harder to save this great migration from pesticides, climate change and habitat destruction.
