Ecological restoration – the process of assisting in the recovery of damaged habitats – is hard, and many researchers are trying to find technologies that enhance restoration outcomes.

Ecological restoration – the process of assisting in the recovery of damaged habitats – is hard, and many researchers are trying to find technologies that enhance restoration outcomes. While these efforts are laudable, many of the most helpful current technologies are expensive and difficult for most people to use. Fortunately, there are lots of low-tech options that require minimal funding and technological expertise, and that have been used by land managers for decades. In this talk, restoration ecologist and UA professor Dr. Elise Gornish will share these cheap and easy “old school” techniques – from seed balls to rock lunas – for restoring disturbed ecosystems. Dr. Elise Gornish is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in Ecological Restoration at the University of Arizona. Her research and outreach program focuses on identifying strategies for successful restoration in arid land systems and integration of restoration approaches into weed management. In addition to vegetation management, Dr. Gornish is passionate about STEM inclusion and is the Director of UA GALS (Girls on Outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science). This new program focuses on providing science learning and leadership opportunities to traditionally underserved female high school students through backcountry programming. We are all dependent on biodiversity for our survival — from individuals and communities to businesses and cities — which means we need a circular economy to restore and regenerate nature. So, where does the bee fit into the city we live in? What can we do to nurture it in the center of a large city, thus creating a green path for the biodiversity of the city? We, as people, are directly interconnected to the bee, yet we surely treat it in a smupid way, often forgetting its importance for our survival. Are we in a position to get to know it better, making use of all its benefits? That’s the solution Aggelina Kanellopoulou proposes. A creative, colourful and aromatic approach for all ages! Aggelina is an animal behaviorist from Athens with a BSc in Psychology and an obvious fascination for bees. Her passion for bees has been growing ever since she took beekeeping master classes. She then became convinced she had to share the bee magic with the world. A MSc on Animal Behavior (Edinburgh University) was her next step which led to research in bee labs in the USA, Spain and Greece. But to her, science was just a tool to participate in what actually creates change: education. Along with this vision, Aggelina has worked with children internationally in various settings, while also supervising numerous conservation events and research projects. In 2017, she founded “The Bee Camp”, a team with an aim to protect urban biodiversity, to promote the protection of the bees and to in- crease urban plant life.
