Ecological restoration – the process of assisting in the recovery of damaged habitats – is hard, and many researchers are trying to find technologies that enhance restoration outcomes. While these efforts are laudable, many of the most helpful current technologies are expensive and difficult for most people to use. Fortunately, there are lots of low-tech options that require minimal funding and technological expertise, and that have been used by land managers for decades. In this talk, restoration ecologist and UA professor Dr. Elise Gornish will share these cheap and easy “old school” techniques – from seed balls to rock lunas – for restoring disturbed ecosystems. Dr. Elise Gornish is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in Ecological Restoration at the University of Arizona. Her research and outreach program focuses on identifying strategies for successful restoration in arid land systems and integration of restoration approaches into weed management. In addition to vegetation management, Dr. Gornish is passionate about STEM inclusion and is the Director of UA GALS (Girls on Outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science). This new program focuses on providing science learning and leadership opportunities to traditionally underserved female high school students through backcountry programming.
