Nick Breeze gives an eye opening account of what happened at each COP through Dubai, starting with the famous Paris Accord in 2015, and often crossing paths with the founder of this channel, the late Stuart Scott. In the nearly 30 years that the UN’s Conferences of the Parties (COP) have come and gone, emissions have increased by 60%, CO2 levels in the atmosphere have sailed past the 350pp million safe limit to 421 ppm today, and 250 billion tons of greenhouse gasses have been released. As a result, global temperatures have continued to rise, crossing the 1.5 degree celsius safe boundary to an average of 1.64C for the entire year we just experienced. As in Dubai, this year’s #COP in Azerbaijan, will be presided over by an oil and gas executive, Mukhtar Babayev, with promises to secure finances and an agreement to reduce emissions and increase renewable energy. No mention of the restoration of nature. What if climate scientists like #PeterWadhams and #PaulBeckwith were asked to address the COP and taken seriously? It would be a far cry from the deals pasted together at #COP28, which make the oil and gas industries look good, as they agree to fix their leaky pipes, and the meat industry to lessen the methane from cow burps. But measures like these are bandaids that do little to heal the gaping wounds of climate breakdown. Wealthy countries, who have created the problem, propose to contribute insufficient funds to help the rest of the world cope with the damage they have done. Millions are offered where trillions are needed. 100,000 people attended COP28, some flying in private jets, thousands of them representing fossil fuel interests, and some coming to make lucrative deals with other petrostates. Can the COP process be changed so that it really does something? Not in 28 years! Some of our team attended virtually. Here is our commentary on this year’s COP out. Unfortunately, they are a finite resource and pose significant risks to our environment; therefore, they must be replaced. For the transition to a future energy economy making use of hydrogen as a fuel produced by nuclear power and renewables, Professor Eric McFarland predicts that methane will be the most important molecule for prosperity in the next century. McFarland’s research has shown that the methane in abundant natural gas can be cost-effectively converted by pyrolysis in high-temperature molten metals and salts to solid carbon and hydrogen gas. The cheapest heat and electricity in the U.S. comes from burning natural gas; however, increasingly major markets (e.g. California and Germany) have imposed carbon taxes which make this CO2-free process competitive today.
