Rimp Dorjee Lepcha is a Senior Engineer with the Sikkim State Government and has served as the Project Director for the Asian Development Bank project for South Asia Tourism Infrastructure Development Project in the state. In addition to being the President of the Rotary Club, Gangtok South, he has also been nominated as India’s Goodwill Ambassador to Brazil. As a member of the Hazard Safety Cell, he has done a great deal of good work in post-earthquake rehabilitation with regard to raising funds and execution. Based on his valuable contribution, he was invited by the government of Taiwan as a ‘Future Leader of South Asia’. He has also been invited by the United States Government for an international Visitors Leadership Program on disaster management. He is a reader, a music enthusiast and an adventurer but at the heart of it all, he is passionate about the well being of the mountains that he calls home. Watch him speak from the heart about how plans for sustainability and averting disaster have been put to action and can be spread far and wide. He talks about the Himalayas as the 'third pole' of the world. He also speaks about how the children of the world must be educated in the culture of sustainability, and respect for resources, like it, is done in the mountainous regions. For nearly half her life, Heidi Kritz has been working to protect Alaska’s Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine project. The proposed copper and gold mining project threatens the bay, which is the largest salmon fishery in the world and is critical to the local economy, ecological stability, and native peoples way of life. Kritz and her community have fought tirelessly against the project both within Alaska and the Lower 48 states. She has helped organize rallies, worked on a massive letter writing campaign against the mine project that ultimately gathered more than 6,000 voices, and has helped mobilize a new generation of regional activists by working with high school students in tribal schools. Kritz’s leadership has added momentum to a decade-long fight to protect the Bristol Bay watershed, and she plans keep up the fight to defend the land and her home.
