McElroy leads the Diocese of San Diego and is an outspoken proponent of the urgent need for the Catholic Church to address climate change. Bishop McElroy holds degrees in American history from Harvard College and Stanford University and is the author of two books: The Search for an American Public Theology andMorality and American Foreign Policy. In addition, he has written a series of articles in America magazine touching upon key elements of Catholic social teaching. He was born in 1954, was ordained in 1970, appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco in 2010 and named Sixth Bishop of San Diego by Pope Francis in 2015. Bishop McElroy is the vice-president of the California Catholic Conference and serves at the national conference of bishops on the administrative committee, the ecumenical committee, the committee on domestic justice and the committee on international affairs. Jose Aguto will close out our conference with a call to action, addressing the important role of the laity to motivate and inform the church and the need and responsibility for advocacy. He'll also share his personal story of his passion to Care for Creation and how it is guided by his Catholic faith and strengthened by Laudato Si' to care for the poor and our earth. Jose is the Associate Director of the Catholic Climate Covenant, which collaborates with other Catholic organizations to advance the Church's call for us to love and care for God's creation and our vulnerable neighbors. Building bridges across differences is an important component of this work. Before joining the Covenant, Jose worked for the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the National Congress of American Indians, and EPA's American Indian Environmental Office. He graduated from Brown University and Villanova Law School and served with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division.
