The Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries are vital for millions, but illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing threatens their sustainability, harming fish populations and coastal economies. To combat this, vessel monitoring systems (VMS) provide essential data on fishing activities, enabling swift action against IUU fishing.

Since 2023, the Improving Rural Livelihoods Through Resilient Agrifood Systems project has been transforming lives in Kitson Town, Jamaica. Implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the Government of Jamaica and supported by the Government of India, this initiative empowers rural communities through training, technology, and entrepreneurship.

Over 200 individuals have been trained, with nearly 63% being women and over one-third youth. The project introduces climate-smart solutions, enhancing skills in food safety, business planning, and sustainable farming. Aligned with FAO’s Four Betters, it showcases how South-South Cooperation can improve livelihoods and empower women and youth in agrifood systems.

This video showcases the impact of the Facility for Climate Action to Achieve Nationally Determined Contributions (FACE-NDC) project in Zambia, highlighting a Training of Trainers (ToT) Programme on Renewable Energy held from April 8-22, 2026. The program gathered 46 participants, including university lecturers and technical experts, to enhance national capacity in renewable energy technologies.

Featuring personal stories, the video illustrates the transformation of participants into certified trainers skilled in biogas systems, clean cooking solutions, and solar photovoltaic technologies. It emphasizes their vital role in advancing Zambia's green transition and supporting the country's climate commitments, while also promoting the FACE-NDC project's visibility and the Renewable Energy Trainers Network.

Despite ongoing global challenges, world hunger decreased for the third consecutive year in 2025, with an estimated 645 million people facing hunger—14 million fewer than in 2024 and 43 million fewer than in 2022, according to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report.

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic, located at the crossroads of Southeast Asia, is facing ecological challenges due to unsustainable practices and climate change. In collaboration with the government, FAO is implementing a transformative program to integrate biodiversity into agricultural sectors and support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Through a national roadmap for 2024–2030, the initiative focuses on climate-resilient cropping systems and sustainable land management. Farmers in provinces like Champasak are already benefiting from practices such as integrated pest management and crop diversification, which enhance food security and soil health. With training and policy alignment, Lao PDR is fostering resilient agrifood systems that prioritize biodiversity and secure livelihoods for future generations.

Cocoa farmers in Côte d'Ivoire are enhancing their resilience to climate change by restoring degraded land through agroforestry. Sylvie Sopie N'Gbesso has doubled her cocoa production in two years, while Nicole Kambou is promoting sustainable farming via a cooperative that provides essential equipment and labor.

This initiative is supported by two FAO programs: PROMIRE, funded by the Green Climate Fund, which encourages zero-deforestation cocoa agroforestry, and SCOLUR-CI, backed by the Global Environment Facility, which focuses on cooperative models for sustainable cocoa production and ecosystem restoration. Together, these efforts help farmers protect forests and secure their livelihoods.

Between 2000 and 2024, food and agricultural trade surged fivefold, with low- and middle-income countries increasingly integrated into global markets. However, these markets are vulnerable to shocks such as extreme weather, conflicts, and financial crises. The 2026 edition of The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets explores the impact of these disruptions on trade and global food security.

The report emphasizes the necessity for trade policies that acknowledge the interdependence of agrifood systems, enhance resilience, and mitigate the adverse effects of shocks on food markets.
