Our trash tells a lot about who we are, what we value and how we behave. This year, we launched a new on-the-ground research project called Trash Lab that helps us get the whole story about the trash in our ocean. Much of what we uncovered during the project is unsettling, but one thing is clear: Many people care deeply about their local beaches and the special ocean places they enjoy with their friends and family.

Oceans are silently choking on our plastic waste. Plastic and synthetic materials are the most common types of debris in our oceans and are having horrific impacts on marine wildlife and systems. As an island continent "girt by sea" marine debris is of particular importance for Australia. Creatures get entangled in plastics and drown and ingested concentrated toxins from plastics pose a threat to the health of the food chain. Plastics also transport and introduce species into new environments.
