Past climate changes in Yellowstone shed light on our future | Cathy Whitlock | TEDxBigSky
Because Yellowstone is the last intact ecosystem in the temperate latitudes of the Planet, its importance goes beyond its boundaries. Yellowstone’s ecosystem, which has been operating for thousands of years, is now undergoing rapid changes as a result of global warming. Paleoecologist Cathy Whitlock describes her research in wild places like Yellowstone, and her quest to understand the consequences of future climate change in light of her understanding of the past. Dr. Cathy Whitlock is a Regents Professor Emerita in Earth Sciences at Montana State University and nationally and internationally recognized for her research and leadership activities in the field of climate and environmental change. Her studies of Yellowstone’s environmental history began in the 1980s when she started to collect sediment cores from lakes in search of information about past vegetation and climate change. This research continues to the present day in Yellowstone and in comparable places around the world. She served as lead author of the 2017 Montana Climate Assessment, which has inspired climate-change discussions across the state and led to the recent Montana Climate Solutions Plan, a consensus document for Montana’s future. Cathy has received numerous awards and honors from professional societies and organizations, and in 2018, she became the first person from a Montana university to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. The three P's to a Sustainable Future | Mehul Manjeshwar | TEDxMSRIT
Awareness about climate change and the consequences of our actions on the environment are on the rise, but that's just the first step in this long journey. Mehul Manjeshwar's mantra for a sustainable future is to look at people, planet and profits. The behind the scenes of a product is just as important as how the product is used and how it is disposed of. Mehul gives us a more wholesome perspective on the entire process and how it can be made to be more sustainable for the environment. Mehul Manjeshwar, born and raised in Qatar and Canada, currently leads the marketing and sustainability communications at Bare Necessities. He shares the story of the brand through meaningful partnerships, words, and actions. Being a firm believer in the impact of communication, raising awareness, and education being the foundation of change, he has always been passionate about sustainability. Mehul completed his MBA in the field to learn about the life cycle of products and how every process has an impact on the environment. He spent years studying and volunteering his time for environmental causes in Canada, Costa Rica, and Indonesia to raise awareness of the problems that our world faces today. Mehul is a Climate Reality Leader having had the opportunity to be trained during the Climate Reality Leadership Corps with former Vice President Al Gore among other knowledgeable experts in the sustainability field. He continually inspires communities to create a better lifestyle and live sustainably. With the conviction that the world is capable of finding a balance between technology and non-conformism, Mehul believes that sustainability is not about giving up either side completely but about finding the best of both worlds. One Earth: Integrating Climate Action & Biodiversity Conservation into a Blueprint
The vast biodiversity of our planet is the underlying fabric supporting all life on Earth, but the prognosis is grim: biodiversity rates are continuing to plummet as extinctions of species accelerate.

Fortunately, the evidence suggests that there are in fact viable pathways for successful action at a global scale, but only if we mobilize and act decisively and rapidly. In this session, we will learn how we can protect and restore 50% of global landscapes while staying below 1.5°C temperature rise in the next few decades. Projects such as the newly launched Global Safety Net provide a roadmap: a bioregional approach combining world-class science, a clear focus on Indigenous rights and stewardship, support for grassroots action, and a vision for transformative philanthropy.

This panel took place at the Bioneers 2020 Conference.

Hosted by Justin Winters, Co-Founder and Executive Director of One Earth, with: Carly Vynne, Strategic Partner at RESOLVE; Oscar Soria, Campaign Director at AVAAZ; Karl Burkart, Managing Director of One Earth; Angela Amanakwa Kaxuyana, part of the senior leadership of the Brazilian Coordination of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon (COIAB).

Ilarion Merculieff | Mother Earth Speaks | Talks at Google
Ilarion Merculieff discusses what Mother Earth is saying about the trials and tribulations of the world, what it means, and what the Indigenous Elders say we must do. We have more environmental organizations in existence today all over the world than there was thirty years ago, and yet Mother Earth's life support systems as we know it are coming to the edge and no one asks why. Ilarion argues that we need to examine the cause and realign ourselves in terms of the way we deal with the trials and tribulations of humans today. Business as usual is simply not going to work. Ilarion Merculieff has more than forty years of experience serving his people, the Unangan (Aleut) of the Pribilof Islands, and other indigenous peoples in a number of capacities—locally, nationally, and internationally. Throughout his entire career, Merculieff has been a passionate advocate for indigenous rights, and for a harmonious relationship with Mother Earth. He has received a number of awards for his work, including the Environmental Excellence Award for lifetime achievement from the Alaska Forum on the Environment. Ilarion is currently an independent consultant, president of the Global Center for Indigenous Leadership and Lifeways and serves as a Senior Advisor to the World Wilderness Congress and advisor to the Native Lands and Wilderness Council. Moderated by Andrei Gheorghe.
