A chronicle of the lives and economic struggles of two families in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — one Black and one white — across more than three decades, this “knockout documentary†(The New York Times) raises unsettling questions about the changing nature of the American economy. When the team first began documenting the families’ lives in 1991, the Neumanns and Stanleys were both struggling to adapt to a new, global economy and the trend towards part-time, lower-wage work. With profound intimacy, the documentary follows the stories of the Stanleys and the Neumanns across six presidential administrations and offers a powerful window into how they and their now-grown children have fared while trying to stay afloat in an economy that has presented challenge after challenge for them. “There are so many people struggling the same way with the cost of everything and not getting enough on your paycheck to cover your monthly expenses,†said Terry Neumann, who was a mom of young kids when the documentary’s producers began filming with her and is now in her early 60s. “It’s like we haven’t come very far.†“I won’t give up,†said Jackie Stanley, who is working as a real estate agent while entering her 70s. “Two American Families: 1991-2024†is a FRONTLINE production with Okapi Productions LLC and Public Affairs Television, Inc. in association with Left/Right Docs. Sept. 28, 2021 on The Story: Old Town, once a pride and joy of Portland's downtown corridor, is struggling to survive. We talked with Lan Su Chinese Garden Executive Director Katherine Nye about how the pandemic, a growing houseless crisis and racism have impacted the garden.
Trudell is a 2005 documentary film about American Indian activist and poet John Trudell. The film traces Trudell's life from his childhood in Omaha, Nebraska, through his role as a leader of the American Indian Movement. It also covers his rebirth as a musician and spoken word poet after his wife died in a house fire suspected as arson. Heather Rae produced and directed the film, which took her more than a decade to complete. Trudell aired nationally in the U.S. on April 11, 2006 as part of the Independent Lens series on PBS. The city has initiated its ""10-Year Plan to End Homelessness"". How has the face of homelessness and our approach to the problem changed? Why do some think the outcomes will be different this time?

National Perspective on Homelessness with Nan Roman
Is ending homelessness a realistic goal -- or a utopian pipe dream? Nan Roman, President and CEO of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, will discuss what is known about the causes and nature of this difficult problem. She will examine emerging evidence-based solutions and the impact they have had on communities that adopt them. Finally she will consider whether there is adequate knowledge, capacity, and public and political will to end homelessness in our cities and in the nation once and for all.
