At a news conference today, officials released data showing nine New York communities, including New York City, could benefit by over $400 million annually from the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (PRRIA).

The New York Senate passed PRRIA (A1749 Glick/S1464 Harckham) in 2024 and 2025. Having cleared Assembly committees in 2025, the bill, with 75 sponsors, is now on the Assembly floor.

Dr. Daniel Pauly highlights aquaculture's varied impact. Low-trophic species like bivalves (mussels, oysters) and seaweed offer sustainable options. But industrial salmon and other marine predator farming depend on wild fish feed. China's two-thirds share of global fish farming, especially carnivorous species, magnifies environmental impact.

To support sustainable seafood and ocean health, demand low-trophic aquaculture, stronger regulation of open-net pens, and true industry transparency.

Our ocean cleanup system undergoes continuous testing and efficiency improvements. This year, our primary objective is to scale up river technology.

By deploying Interceptors in 30 key cities, we aim to reduce plastic flow from rivers to the ocean by up to one-third by 2030.

Despite the ongoing war, life continues in Ukraine. The FAO, supported by the Ukraine Community Recovery Fund (UCRF), has launched a program in Sumy Oblast. This initiative provides rural families with training and direct financial aid to bolster aquaculture, beekeeping, and dairy sectors, helping them adapt, sustain production, and strengthen livelihoods.

A consultation and dialogue session for private sector representatives in food systems will take place on January 21, preceding LARC39. This session offers an opportunity to engage with FAO regional representatives and technical leaders.

Participants will also coordinate to develop a statement outlining the sector's position for LARC39 member countries and select representatives for the main conference in March.

FAO will host a virtual consultation with the Scientific and Academic Sector on January 14, 2026. This online event aims to facilitate an exchange of ideas, allowing the sector to share its perspectives and potential contributions to FAO's work areas.

Participants will draft a statement reflecting the sector's position, to be presented to Member Countries during LARC39. The consultation will also elect spokespersons to represent the sector at the Conference.

The Ibero-American and Caribbean Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security, alongside the #AlimentaciónPrimero Pact, marks a significant political step. Its core aim is to foster national, regional, and global commitments for just, sustainable, and resilient food systems. The initiative seeks to strengthen political and programmatic coordination through strategic planning, FAO partnerships, and promoting the Pact.

A mission to Chile will track these commitments, bolster the Alliance's internal governance, and deepen collaboration with the FAO. It also aims to support Chile's ratification of the #AlimentaciónPrimero Pact, aligning with international parliamentary efforts and preparations for the 2026 World Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition.
