Healthcare & Homelessness Panel at Portland City Club
Streamed live on Jan 9, 2015

Presented on January 9, 2015, Healthcare & Homelessness

Panelists: Crista Gardner, Chair of the Research Committee on Health Care and Homelessness; David Labby, Medical Director at Health Share Oregon; Leo Rhodes, Vice Chair of the Committee on Health Care and Homelessness, and board member of Street Roots; Rachel Solotaroff, Medical Director at Central City Concern.

How can the maximum health benefit for the homeless population of Multnomah County be achieved from health care reform and expansion of the Oregon Health Plan? Homelessness remains a complex public health challenge. For too many individuals, the relentless struggle for safety and stability overshadows health needs. Common illnesses are allowed to progress, and minor injuries fester until they become emergencies. Challenges in caring for those experiencing homelessness reveal deep fault lines in our current health care system. This forum will discuss City Club's newly released report on health care and homelessness, and the issues we are facing as a community.

What is Resiliency by Tora Fisher

Tora Fisher is a New York based singer-songwriter and performance artist. When she was young, her mother encouraged her to develop her artistic side while her father exposed her to a world outside of the arts: he created the Fisher House Foundation, a network of comfort homes where military and their families can stay at no cost while their loved ones receive care and treatment. Tora developed a keen interest in these two starkly different worlds: that of the arts, and the art of war.

When Tora was 13, she experienced the unfathomable when she was the sole survivor of a plane crash that killed her father, stepmother, and four others. Her resilience and determination to recover from this trauma was nurtured by her love of music and performance and her ability to pursue her dreams of being a singer-songwriter, pianist, dancer and recording artist. She has also fulfilled her dream of supporting her father's legacy by donating proceeds from her CDs to the Fisher House Foundation.

As Tora so aptly put it, "its not about what happened to me; it's about what's happening."Published on May 31, 2014

The Science of Medical Cannabis by David Abrams, M.D.

Donald Abrams, M.D. is chief of Hematology and Oncology at San Francisco General Hospital and the co-author—with Andrew Weil—of Integrative Oncology (Oxford University Press). Abrams has extensive experience working with cancer and HIV/AIDS patients and is a pioneer in the field of medical cannabis research.

The U.S. government classifies cannabis—along with heroin and LSD—as a Schedule I drug, the most tightly restricted category of drugs in the United States. According to the federal government, Schedule I drugs are unsafe and have "no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States."

However, as medical cannabis proponents have pointed out since the Controlled Substances Act was passed by Congress in 1970, cannabis has been used medicinally for thousands of years, and there has never been a reported case of a marijuana overdose. Moreover, in recent years clinical researchers around the world have demonstrated the medicinal value of cannabis. Uploaded on Oct 14, 2010
