Unlocking new capacity in 6G cellular systems via site-specific ML-aided design | ITU Journal
6G cellular networks will be extremely complex systems that must meet many competing requirements in a large variety of environments and use cases. A key enabling 6G technology will be deep learning, which can unlock previously hidden system-level gains, particularly by effectively learning custom site-specific communication techniques that are optimally adapted for each cell-site. Prof. Jeffrey Andrews will present a short summary of some of his group’s recent discoveries and technologies based on deep learning (DL) that demonstrate a large potential impact in 6G. The first is a novel and practical approach for beam alignment in millimeter wave and THz bands that can achieve a phenomenal speed up, at least 10x and in some cases approaching 1000x, by sensing and exploiting unique aspects of the environment. The second is a new architecture for estimating high dimensional channels by harnessing the expressive power of deep generative networks to develop a custom model of each cell’s channel distribution. The third is a site-specific multicell optimization that rapidly learns near-optimal global settings for each base stations antenna arrays, a problem that is completely intractable using conventional techniques. It is trained and tested on AT&T’s commercial simulation platform and shows large gains over existing 3GPP approaches. How climate change threatens medicinal discovery | Jeffrey Mah | TEDxYouth@GrandviewHeights
From traditional to modern medicine, botanicals play a large role in how we prevent and treat diseases and illnesses. Jeffrey hopes to raise awareness of the relationship between nature and medicine, and to encourage actions to preserve biodiversity for the survival of both the environment and humankind. Jeffrey Mah is a doctoral candidate at Institute of Child Health at University College London and the founder of Otak Natural Skincare. His doctoral research focuses on molecular biology and organic chemistry for drug discovery. His current research project involves extracting SFTI-1 from sunflowers and developing therapeutic intervention for eczema. Jeffrey obtained his bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical studies, where he conducted research in ethnopharmacology to analyze the relationship between species biodiversity and medicinal development. Navigating the Perilous Waters at the Edge of Glaciers to Understand Sea Level Rise
(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) 0:13 - Introduction 4:44 - Navigating the Perilous Waters at the Edge of Glaciers to Understand Sea Level Rise 49:21 - Audience Questions Collapsing ice shelves and calving of large icebergs in Greenland and Antarctica have recently become major drivers of sea level rise. The rapidity of these changes has come as a surprise, revealing major gaps in our understanding of how ice sheets respond to a changing climate. To a large extent, these gaps are due to the lack of measurements from the marine edge of glaciers - the Achilles' heel of glaciers. For over a decade, since the glaciers in Greenland began their retreat, Fiammetta Straneo and her group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have been probing the edge of massive calving glaciers in iceberg-choked fjords in Greenland using helicopters, icebreakers, fishing vessels, and autonomous vehicles. The understanding gained through these measurements is being used in models aimed at improving sea-level rise predictions. Recorded on 05/13/2019. Series: "Jeffrey B. NASA Studies Details of a Greening Arctic (June 2016)

Published on Jun 2, 2016

NASA scientists used almost 30 years of data from the NASA/U.S. Geological Survey Landsat satellites to track changes in vegetation in Alaska and Canada. Of the more than 4 million square miles, 30 percent had increases in vegetation (greening) while only 3 percent had decreases (browning).

This is the first study to produce a continent-scale map while still providing detailed information at the human scale. "It shows the climate impact on vegetation in the high latitudes," said Jeffrey Masek, a researcher who worked on the study and the Landsat 9 project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The study, led by NASA scientist Junchang Ju, is online here

Temperatures are warming faster in the Arctic than elsewhere, which has led to longer seasons for plants to grow in and changes to the soils. Scientists have observed grassy tundras changing to shrublands, and shrubs growing bigger and denser – changes that could have impacts on regional water, energy, and carbon cycles. With the large, continental-scale map complete, researchers will focus on the more human scale – looking at local conditions to see what might control the greening patterns, whether it's local topography, nearby water sources, or particular types of habitat. They also plan to investigate forested areas, particularly in the greening Quebec.

Billion Dollar Crop - The history and advantages of hemp as an industrial fiber
An Australian documentary from 1994 which brings to light the history, many uses of, conspiracy and smear campaign against, and the future of one of the planet's most versatile and potentially revolutionary plants: cannabis.
BILLION DOLLAR CROP shows how the recently developed, non-drug variety of hemp is being researched and cultivated internationally because of the plant's versatile qualities and environmental friendliness. This program takes the audience on a world tour from Australia to the United Kingdom, and from The Netherlands to France and the US. It illustrates how hemp is being cultivated as an industrial fiber for use as an alternative to wood for paper production, to cotton for clothes, and to plywood for construction. We all benefit, especially our forests and topsoil. Published on May 8, 2012

Sustainability and Global Grand Challenges by Jeffrey Sachs
Static Preview

Jeffrey Sachs presents the key note presentation on sustainability, most particularly sustainable development (environmental and economic) for the first Global Grand Challenges Summit 2013 in London.  The lectures is on how sustainable development must occur and how countries are not doing enough to meet this in either terms of energy and the economy. Published on Mar 30, 2013

In an October 15th 2013 article in the Financial Times in response to the climate catastrophe of Typhoon Haiyan, he notes "People need to see credible energy plans, pathways for each country and region to a prosperous low-carbon future. Such pathways can be found, but aside from excellent work in a handful of places, such as the UK, Denmark and California, such long-term planning has not been done...The basic elements of a pathway include four key pillars: more electricity from low-carbon technologies rather than coal; replacing fossil fuels with electricity as the fuel source for sectors such as cars and household heating; greater energy efficiency in industry and the home; and the end of deforestation (which emits carbon).
