SPEAKER BIO: Michael W Mehaffy, Ph.D., is a researcher, educator, author, and consultant in urban development with international practice.  He is also the Executive Director of the Sustasis Foundation, an Oregon public benefit non-profit focused on research and publication in front-line urban issues. He has held teaching and/or research appointments in architecture, urban planning, and philosophy at eight graduate institutions in seven countries, and he is on the editorial boards of three international journals of urban design. Michael is also the former President of the Goose Hollow Foothills League, the venerable Portland neighborhood association. He has consulted for the City of Portland, Metro, and many other local governments, and he has taught architecture and urbanism at the University of Oregon's Portland graduate campus. He was the project manager for the master developer of Orenco Station, the pioneering transit-oriented development on Portland's Westside MAX line. 

Michael has been especially interested in Portland's lessons as an internationally celebrated urban laboratory with a number of notable successes, but also a number of cautionary mistakes and lessons learned. Michael now lives in the Columbia Gorge nearby two daughters and seven grandchildren, but still fondly considers Portland a second home.

To strengthen the technical and institutional capacities of stakeholders in driving digital transformation in the urban domain, the “Toolkit on Digital Transformation for People-Oriented Cities and Communities” was developed by ITU and 12 other partners. This Toolkit draws a connection between the technological and interoperable solutions for urban operations while supporting the enhancement of the ability of authorities to envision and adopt cutting-edge technologies to make society more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. 

This Toolkit includes insights on international standards and provides guidance, and use-cases on the application of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), along with the latest reports on the ever-evolving topic of digital transformation. The Toolkit can universally benefit cities and communities, as well as regions and countries regardless of their level of smart or digital development, or their geographical or economic status. This AI for Good Webinar will be a unique opportunity to understand the benefits of leveraging this Toolkit across the smart city ecosystem while keeping digital transformation as the fulcrum.

(March 10, 2022) An example of a neighborhood association calling together to discuss the location of a Safe Rest Village in the Downtown neighborhood. Safe Rest Villages provide shelter and case management with wraparound behavioral and mental health services. Presently the sidewalks of Downtown and Old Town have grown crowded with people "living" in tents. SRVs are seen as a more humane alternative. 

PDNA-sponsored Q&A session focused on the proposed Safe Rest Village Naito Parkway site.

Panel included Portland City Commissioner Dan Ryan and Multnomah County Commissioner Sharon Meieran. Questions were submitted by neighborhood residents in advance of this session.

Michael Montoya Speaking Pearl Neighborhood Associaition (PDNA) Board Meeting 09/09/21. Mr. Montoya is interim head of the Office of Community & Civic Life, a bureau of the City of Portland. Mr. Montoya, served as the bureau’s strategy, innovation & performance manager for just under two years, before being named interim director in May 2021.

Founder Ross Moster and board members Ann Pacey and Rand Chatterjee of Village Vancouver (B.C.) Transition Society view Vancouver as a network of neighborhood-sized villages. They encourage neighbors to get to know each other. Projects arise from these connections: recycling depot, dinner groups, seed libraries.
