Sustainability Action Media (SAM) at Earth Day Conference 2012 sponsored by the Earth & Spirit Council. Videotaped by Tom Hopkins of SAM and Barry Heidt of SAM. The panel discussion between elders and youth was around a central conference topic: "What gives us hope and heart to keep working on what is best for our Earth in the face of difficult changes?" The evening closed with song, drumming and celebration.
In this excerpt we cover part of the discussion around "hope" opening with Larry Merculieff followed by Barbara Ford and ending with Duane Elgin.

She is joined in the response by Ilarion (Larry) Merculieff who was born and raised with a traditional upbringing on the Pribilof Islands of the Bering Sea. His traditional name, Kuuyux, was given to him when he was four and means extension of ancient knowledge into modern times.

Grandmother Maria Alice Campos Freire talks about the Grandmothers and the challenges they face to fulfill their mission. Grandmother Maria Alice Campos Freire was born in Brazil. Growing up in Brazil she saw much war and persecution. At age 17, when pregnant with her daughter, Maria Alice was put in prison and tortured. Her daughter was born after Maria Alice became a political refuge in Europe and Africa before receiving amnesty to return to Brazil where she led a spiritual community in the deepest parts of the Amazon Rainforest reservation.
