NASA reported that Earth's average surface temperature in 2022 tied with 2015 as the fifth warmest on record, continuing the planet's long-term warming trend.
Global temperatures were 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.89 degrees Celsius) above the 1951-1980 baseline average, according to scientists from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS).

A pioneer in sustainable architecture, renewable energy, and nearly zero-carbon buildings, Duncan is a director of the Irish Environmental Network, Dublin Civic Trust, and Green Foundation Ireland. He also produces and presents RTE 1's 'Eco Eye' and 'About the House'.
Duncan founded Eco Ed 4 All, which develops environmental education for Irish schools and CPD courses for teachers. These cover critical themes like Climate Change, Biodiversity, Circular Economy, and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Syukuro Manabe delivered his Nobel Prize lecture, "Physical modelling of Earth’s climate," on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. Professor Thors Hans Hansson introduced him.
Manabe shared the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics with Klaus Hasselmann. Their work was recognized for "physical modelling of Earth's climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming."
The prize, awarded for "groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems," also saw Giorgio Parisi receive the other half for his discoveries on disorder and fluctuations in physical systems.
